This Week's Special:

Magdalene knows that she has been drinking a bit much, which she attributes to boredom. It is not overstimulation but under-stimulation and she yearns for something beyond the skinner box of algorithm's servings, which box her. The world of imagination sprawls on multiple frontiers and Magdalene resolves to meander with purpose. An alchemist, she brews Potion #77508 just to do something she has not done before

Magdalene's potion shelf is overfull. A stain on kitchen floor only glows during waxing gibbous moon, which tactical postponements have hidden from rental agent. Magdalene is perfectly open to giving Potion #77508 away to someone who, friendly, is liable to give something in return. Gift economics?

Potion #77508 instils a particular effect on the drinker for three to six years. By this time, the imbiber will have forgotten habit - it is a very specific addiction cure. Specifically, it stops potion-taker from texting YouTube, of obscure songs, to people.

The probable market for Potion #77508 does not have social media. They are liable to get intoxicated and/or high on their lonesome, or left alone to devices whilst intoxicated and/or high. They are in their thirties, when shitfaced get-togethers are stymied by their peers' habit of spawning. They have a smart phone.

That market is Kristy.

Kristy was standing in a field. She was approached by a cow, walking bipedal so that it towered above her. Kristy's eyes and smile widened.

The cow asked: 'Are you cooking?'

'I'm in no state to cook. This is my third.' Kristy indicated her wine glass. 'Also, some hallucinogens.'

'Ah.' The cow understood. 'I'll send you something.'

Tofu Which Pairs Perfectly With Your Wine is Exactly What It Says on the Tin, or wrapping. Also on the wrapping are instructions:

1.    heat shallow oil in frying pan

2.    throw in the cubes (of tofu)

3.    poke 'em around for three minutes or four drinks, whichever comes first

4.    flip tofu cubes

5.    add dash of the wine which you are drinking

6.    fry for another minute or two drinks, whichever comes first

7.    place tofu on eating surface

Optional: turn off heat

Following these instructions with splash of merlot imbues the tofu with flavours best suited to merlot, within tofu's limitations. A splash of tawny converts this tofu into the silken dessert variety, leaking its own caramel sauce.

Kristy received ice-packed delivery on her doormat, thirty-six 350g packets of TWPPWYW (pronounced 'twip-wee'). Kristy is allergic to soy. So the market is the wine pairer, the lush hiding alcoholism behind questionable gastronomy.

That market is Magdalene.

This Week's Special:

When Frankie is having a bad week, she will don virgin killer and go to hobby store that has liquor licence. Frankie will sit at front counter, drinking beers and opening Pokémon Trading Card Game booster packs. She will loll through cards like playing scratchie, uninterrupted and intimidating the Warhammer 40,000 players. Occasionally she pulls something good.

As anyone with television knows, Jessie and James routinely and reliably employ pitfall traps. The absence of a Trap Hole card from Pokémon TCG is an obvious and glaring omission. It is so obvious that, through sheer obviousness, people still occasionally pull one from a booster pack. Said cards are not tournament legal.

Instead, through sheer obviousness, placing a Pokémon TCG Trap Hole Card on ground will manifest a trap hole. Collectors want Trap Hole cards but not enough - ain't no one grading them. The market may lie in overlap of sloth and mal intent. Alternatively, those wary of being followed may fork out for convenient booby trap that fits in wallet.

That market is Giuseppe.

Giuseppe is an enthusiast and so pogo-sticks from one Cabbage Patch kid to the next. It is a high-stakes game of 'floor is lava', if lava is knee-deep writhing mass of dolls craving flesh. Sauerkraut gets boring. Giuseppe pikes onto central island and swipes the thing. This dungeon's boss chirps awake and the dolls scatter - a storey tall Snot the Green Dragon. Giuseppe throws, like ninja stars, triplicate of fidget spinners. Two hit and Snot is sent spinning and fidgeting. Giuseppe pogos his escape.

The thing Giuseppe swiped is a Dango, an obscure videogame console from the 90's. It has increased in price after a renaissance of interest in one of its exclusives, The Fantastic Adventures of SEXDICK.

The target market for the Dango console is, therefore, someone seeking a particular nostalgia. A nostalgia foreign to most, excepting some Brazilians or Iranians. A nostalgia for a gaming age that never really existed. Giuseppe is not this market, but it is certainly large enough.

That market is Felicity.

It is not quite tradition for newlyweds to retain case of the wine drunk during their wedding reception. The idea is to crack bottle on anniversary, which is mid because the majority of wines do not age well. The sentiment is, well, sentimental, the wine acquiring properties of the marriage. Not all marriages reach significant anniversary. Felicity collects the wines.

In Felicity's Cellar is a Particular Bottle of Pepperjack 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon. It is imbued with lockdown's gaze turned inward - or, rather, ears and nose trapped inside. This Particular Bottle reshuffles the gut biome into a centre-left cabinet, meaning farts are as quiet as possible. The drinker's gas takes on the scent of elderflower.

It is not the drinking-alone drunkard who will buy this bottle, nor somm with tasting notes irked by elderflower. The buyer may not necessarily be flatulent but will certainly be self-conscious of the possibility. Someone may look to pair good impression with business lunch, let pitch do the talking and not out the ass. More likely: it has been a while.

That market is Magdalene.

Magdalene is a cog in a machine. She fits well enough but is underutilised - plenty of other cogs will fit her slot in generically min-maxed business. To appreciate herself, Magdalene uses spare time employing her specialisation as alchemist. Each morning's cumulative bowel movements, totalling forty minutes on average, is poor representation of time's value.

What is bitch to do but gather necessities? Gourd of hyena butter for cooking fuel. Used delivery forms for filtration paper. Carton of beer. For drinking.

So Magdalene got drunk and, unrelated, brewed more Potion of Pooping Efficiency. This Potion Is Not A Laxative. Do Not Take This Potion When Experiencing Colonic Retribution. This potion instead improves logistics of anus, eliminating the wait between available poops. Some folks are fine letting their poops procrastinate (because phones) but others prefer to drop bowels like battalion of paratroopers.

That market is Frankie.

This Week's Special:

Magdalene likes to brew potions. Magdalene likes to drink. Magdalene has a mortgage and a full time job in horticultural retail, so bitch has got to multitask.

One such Thursday night produced the Flask of Acute Nicotine Withdrawal. Self-refilling flasks are usually produced by lacing ingredients, in exact proportion and spread, on interior surface. Reverse electrolysis provides the power and water for automated alchemy. The why escaped Magdalene sometime between beers six and seven.

The target market is someone looking to - repeatedly - experience the cranky nicotine receptors of six hours' withdrawal. This market is not entirely hypothetical - a decent chunk of media consumers prefer their feels to be ragey. Food also tastes better.

That market is Azrael.

Azrael is a thug, thief, dealer of illicits and, on weekends, an adventuring party's DPS wizard. The adventuring party is also a wine party. They follow their noses and Gustav Odenkirk's Wine Journal (1991-1992). Regarding a shiraz: notes of plum, pepper, decomposing flesh, emergency flare.

The second-to-latter is probably due to zombie horde, then Betsy's pyrotechnic response. So the adventuring party finds themselves in a restless cemetery. The undead return to their graves when Iris repairs the nearby telecommunications tower, thereby restoring their  phones internet. The slow-coaches have their skulls beaten in, because alcohol.

Azrael's share of the loot is the Quad-Option Flare Gun. It has a jiggermithing that allows for emergency flare to be fired with different effects:

·         S.O.S. - Standard call for assistance, the flare lingers longer in the air.

·         Stun - The flare launches faster and explodes like a flashbang

·         Party - Fired into sky, the flare provides a three minute fireworks show.

·         Combat - The flare becomes three, fired in burst and flaming green.

Azrael does not want the Quad-Option Flare Gun because he can throw fireballs.

That market is Easy.

The most cost-effective form of the shifting wall maze is the hedge variety. It requires an aggressive grower and a full time gardener. Easy is not allowed to touch the treasures guarded by the maze. Easy is allowed compensation for rescuing adventurers lost amongst its hedges, or to loot their corpses.

Easy has come into possession of the 180° Periscope. This periscope, handheld, pokes a metre above and looks backward. It oversees the contours of the past, a topographical narrative of life leading up to present. It reminds people where they left their keys.

Easy does not want to look to the past. He has a cognitive implant that holds his gaze forward and simultaneously looking back makes him dizzy. Somebody else may have forgotten why they do the things they do and want to remember their why. Particularly if booze is involved.

That market is Magdalene.

This Week's Special:

Tropical climes, but the ocean wind is cool on Nathan's pale, heavily sun-screened chest. Most jet-skis run on unleaded but this jet-ski runs on Queensland Diesel aka Bundaberg Rum. This is not necessarily efficient - Bundy leaks into ocean, per jet-ski's design, leaving a hungover yellow slick trailing behind him.

Nathan cuts engine and waits, bobbing on waves. Soon enough: five heads emerge from Bundy-and-Saltwater, watching him. They all have red mullets and are, of course, white.

One says: 'Give us a fish, ya' cunt.'

Mermaids have a diverse society - some are vegans and their bogans like to kill things. Bogan mermaids are attracted to blood and trophy prey. There is traces of polar bear blood in Bundy, hence the arctic symbol on tropical product.

Nathan responds: 'I have fish. I will give you a fish each, if you each give me one of your scales.'

Nathan has an esky of fish. He also has a flash-bang, a frag grenade, a SIG Sauer and two depth charges. The bogan mermaids barter upwards to ten fish for eight scales.

Bogan Mermaid Scales have two main applications. The first is bagging it with photo and name of migrant, then sending this package to ocean. This pays mermaids to pluck said immigrant when they poop into sewage complex, then swim them to their 'home' country. The second application: five bogan mermaid scales, in a pile, will become a carton of XXXX.

Nathan sets out to find that Venn diagram sweet spot of buyer and seller. Meaning: someone who wants what Nathan gots and gots goods that Nathan wants.

Behold the suburban country fair. A tractor pulls trailer, kid'lins on hay bales, around oval's perimeter. Food trucks, stalls, the local postman belting out a few tunes from the stage. Knick-knacks, candles, lots of wine. A toy stall hangs a sign: This Is Not Lego.

Shane says: 'Hello Nathan. Haven't seen you in ages.'

'Uh, yeah.' Nathan, he remembers me? 'I've, my hours changed. Could I get a session ale?'

Nathan sits cross-legged on platform fronting scoreboards and eats seafood paella, a (perched) birds-eye view of the festival. The metalworking displays attracts customers to its corner. The real estate agent watches people pass by, arms crossed. Nathan cannot quite make out the cute lady-bums from this distance.

Nathan pockets a mussel shell and descends back into the throng. There are a lot of cute buts down here.  He walks trying to not seem too pervy. One but catches his attention, holds it reasons he does not understand, nostalgia? The but turns, as does the rest of her body and Nathan is obliged to raise eyes to her face. He doffs his hat.

'Hello Nathan.' Erin's tail lops right and butchers a cactus. 'Follow me to the bathroom?'

Uh huh. There are porta-potties near the change rooms but Erin leads Nathan to the toilets adjacent to the bar.* Erin checks her pockets for a title of deed  on the backway from lady's to gent's, past cafeteria's rear. He follows her pause before the bathroom door, she sink grip into his upper arm and she drives in, pulling him.

Nathan lands on tiles, which is technically not as painful as cement. It is more painful. This is not a rusty, dusty country oval toilet. This is a heavily graffitied handicap/family toilets of a mid-tier suburban shopping centre.

Magdalene has cushioned the toilet seat and rests forearms on students  table, hands clasped: 'And look what Tom's dragged in. How've you been, Nathan?'

'I thought I was gonna' get some, then I hit the floor.' He gets to his feet and doffs his hat. 'But now you're here, so it's evened out.'

'Ever the charmer.' Elbows still on table, hands still clasped but forearms vertical. 'But I've been here for a while. Where is here?'

'I turned right where I should have gone straight. Then I was weaving through the hills. This was the first safe u-turn.' Erin lights dart off tail-tip and shrugs, opens the window. 'But where does the smoke go?'

Magdalene ignores her: 'So. I have potions to sell. Have to empty space from my shelves. I have a flask.'

Nathan, curious: ' As in, a flask that contains two or more doses? Or a flask that refills with potion, every now and then?'

'The latter. Once a day, you may drink from the Flask of Acute Nicotine Withdrawal.'

'Interesting. I could give you a Bogan Mermaid Scale. I don't know what they do, but I'm sure you could crush 'em up and distil 'em for something.'

Surprised: 'Just. One? You don't want that hell-bent thrill that comes after six hours? That mania that says, feels, I can do this?'

'Nah, that always made me break lamps.'

Erin butts out half-dart and throws it out window: 'Fair enough.'

'What I want,' Nathan tangents, 'is a potion to stop a specific habit of mine. I believe you can do custom brews.'

Erin: 'For a price.'

'When I was younger, I would cop inappropriate perv and thumb my nose. It was a bad habit and I grew out of it.'

'So, uh.'

'You want to be pervy again?'

'Now, whenever I meet eyes with a cute woman, I doff my hat. It is a bad habit and it is cringe.'

Magdalene winces: 'It is, and I feel you. But this is not a charity. This is a non-profit.'

Nathan smiles near chuckle: 'So you'll take three Bogan Mermaid Scales for my potion.'

'No. There's no use for those.'

'Yet you'd take one for a Flask of Broken Lamps?'

Erin mutters: 'Knew that was a bad opener.'

Magdalene acknowledges her without addressing her: 'Four.'

Nathan bows forward, hands clasped behind back and face raised, like an anime girl: 'Three.'

'Four.'

'Three.'

'Four. For fuck's sake. Spontaneous Four-Ex is not worth that much.'

Nathan points to open window: 'I could go out there and find a buyer. A racist who wants to deport a moossie. Or a legal resident looking to visit family but who can't be fucked with flying. You know. Fares. Cancellations. The extra fee to book your seat of choice.'
